Damon Rose is a forgotten actor. But he’s no hypocrite. Problem is, there are liars, moral relativists, and hypocrites everywhere. He’s desperate to find an honest way to stand himself back up without taking shortcuts. But living in steamy south Florida, one spectacularly ordinary day to the next, he’s thousands of miles from Hollywood and years past his prime. His only luck is bad. There's a painful car accident, a violent hurricane, and even a bizarre round of golf that starts off like a networking dream, but ends in a bad shank. Soon, he sees only two choices resign himself to a lunch-bucket life in local theater, or stage an outlandish public lie fabricated by his slippery agent to electroshock his career back into life. He chooses both.

Caravel edition by Jason Ward Layne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Caravel is the rare kind of book that covers both a large scale and a small one at the same time, and manages to do justice to both settings. On the grander scale, it is a parable about some of America’s most ridiculous foibles, such as our predilection for “bad boy makes good stories” and our obsession with celebrity of any kind, even the wrong kind. The plot, which jumps from unbelievable to downright ridiculous, heightens our sense of hilarity, disbelief, and ultimately shock at the superficiality of life in the entertainment world, then our wretchedness when we realize how gullible we, the readers, all are as consumers of this tripe. The joke’s on us. This is what Nathanael West would have written if he had lived today, but Layne’s satirical bent and flair for one-liners (not to mention the setting) are also reminiscent of Carl Hiassen at his best.

At the same time that Caravel probes the inanity of show biz, the book delves into the complexities of human relationships, exposing the personal weaknesses that make us all human. The scenes in which the protagonist interacts with his brother are among the very best in the book; anyone who has had a contentious relationship with a sibiling will cringe in self recognition. Layne is also quite good at capturing that private sense of outrage we all experience when we see others getting ahead and we are left behind. The general mood of the book is fairly dark, but Layne’s humor keeps things from getting too murky; there is also the foil of the protagonist’s wise and patient wife to remind us that we do not have to sink to the same level as the protagonist eventually does.

This is the work of an insightful and clever writer, one who observes what is wrong with us and tosses it back to us, playfully but forcefully, challenging us to think fast! If you are fan of satire, you will love this unflinching portrayal of human frailty, and probably laugh out loud more than once -– really, literally. I sure did. I highly recommend this book, and look forward to seeing more from this promising new author.
