While attempting to learn a little about sailors of old and their craft I found this book, thinking it would have useful information about how to tie knots. After downloading it to my kindle and flipping through a few pages, (and noticing that again kindle editions have no diagrams.)I almost deleted it. Not being the type of person to give up on a book easily without giving it a chance, I began reading it hoping it would, at least, have very well described directions for knot tying. This book has nothing to do with tying knots! Having made that point clear, I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good short story and a chuckle. After reading some of these one chapter stories, I actually set back and laughed at what I had just read. I enjoyed every story in this book. The book contains stories, mostly dealing with sailors and their mishaps in port but there are a couple of gentleman scoundrels thrown into the mix.

Sailor Knots W W Jacobs 9781470061036 Books Reviews
hilarious yet believable
My father used to read these stories to the family when I was nine or ten and even later. I kept the hardcovers for a while but lost them in a move. Now I have them again and love them just as much. His descriptions of ordinary life for the underclass in Britain and his love of the sea and of sailors is apparent throughout and provide chuckles and bursts of laughter and empathy with the foibles of the ordinary man and woman.
Wasn't the book I thought it was going to be. Not the book's fault. But it is not a Sailor's Knot tying book. My fault that I did not like the book, not the book's fault.
I also thought I was going to learn about knot tying, but pleasantly found out that the knots were in the mixups and goings on of the characters. It's a fun to read book in which we learn about the language and character of lower class Englishmen. The stories are humorous and well written. We see rascals getting just rewards, badgered husbands and wives turning the tables on their others, tricksters getting tricked, and all leave the reader with a nice feeling.
As a free book you can't go wrong to try it out.
Hey, these stories were not high writing, or important stuff, but, I suspect they are a slice of a bygone time. I liked all of the stories.
It's a good read. Quirky short stories set around the port of London from an era long gone. No illustrations in the edition (you get one line, with the title of the missing picture in the middle of a paragraph, which is a bit confusing), and the illustrations are indexed separately, which is redundant. Nothing about knots though, which is what I was originally looking for.
What can I say. The short stories are old and written with some dialect of English. From 1909 or earlier. Read like something sailor might tell while working on ropes or just telling stories.
