Thraxas and Makri drift ashore in the distant land of Samsarina, in the company of Lisutaris, Head of the Sorcerers Guild. After a miserable voyage on a leaky fishing boat, Thraxas just wants to drink beer, but there are other matters to attend to. Turai has fallen to the enemy, and the armies of the West are gathering. Before war breaks out, there's the great sword-fighting tournament, which gives Thraxas the chance of almost unlimited gambling, if only he can persuade Makri to enter. Makri is surprised to find herself looking after a baby dragon, and even more surprised to discover that Thraxas has a romantic past, one which leads them into a murder investigation in an unfamiliar land, where hostile forces oppose them at every turn. This is the ninth book in the Thraxas series.

Thraxas and the Ice Dragon eBook Martin Scott

Once again, I am impressed by Martin Scotts (Millars?) ability to create such complex characters and intriguing plots, without falling into the common fantasy pitfall of over-compication. He really shows how you don't need an overbuilt or needlessly complicated world - all you need is interesteing characters, a good pace, and some comic-lighter side.

As to the story itself: it was really interesting seeing the characters deal with a very different setting, also because it allowed us to see some new faces (much needed after having a very similar supporting cast in previous books!), and also because it seemed to have enabled the beloved main characters to face some new challenges.
I LOVE this series!!!

Thraxas and the Ice Dragon eBook Martin Scott Reviews

....... None of them covered themselves with glory.I did my part,of course, but as for the rest of the degenerate population, they crumbled under the pressure...... LOL ah Thraxas, so good to have you back!
If you have not read any of the rest of the series, good idea to read other eight books first, but this is simply writing of a character at its finest, a continuation of all that has come before, from addicted personalities to the humour that makes this character such a great read but at the same time with the sense of loss that must be there yet with hope for the future stories that all will work out. Thraxas at his best as he drinks, eats and blunders his way to good outcomes.
You will not only enjoy the story but will now be counting the days till number ten is out!
It's been a while since I last read a Thraxas novel and I finally got around to reading this latest one. It's good to sometimes take a break from the grim situation of the world and from darker fantasy worlds (like my favorite A Song of Ice and Fire) and hang out with the great characters in Scott's world. The humorous characters are the focus here, not the various investigations. The relationship between Sorcerous Investigator Thraxas and the lethal barmaid Makri is one of the more entertaining in fantasy literature. I hope Scott keeps writing these for a long time.
More exposure (no pun intended) of Makri in this one, who is actually my favorite character.
I enjoyed this very much, and it came when I really needed some distraction and comic relief in my life. Thank you, Martin!

This episode was very heavy on drug/alcohol use and I was waiting for some character growth in that regard but it wasn't forth coming. With this novel I've become aware that if I don't see some development towards a Thraxas that is a bit wiser, I will leave off reading him. It's been fun, goodness knows, but after 9 books it is wearing thin. I don't expect him to become a model citizen by any means but some determined steps to curb his self-indulgence would be welcome.

The cover could be improved. If this is Makri, she looks a bit bleached. There are some wonderful freelance cover artists available online.

I highly recommend this book to Thraxas fans. Buy it so the author will keep 'em coming! It's well worth the money in entertainment value.
Actually this is not Mr. Millar's best work, but I was so happy to see the return of Thraxas that it gets 4 stars just for existing. After ten years (?) of disputes with the publisher, Thraxas has been resurrected, and it feels like an old friend has returned from the dead. Mr Millar reports that he is already at work on the next installment, and I am anticipating a more enthusiastic return to the always entertaining adventures of Makri and Thraxas.
After a long absence the Tharax series returns.

Spoiler Alert

This continues the flight of Tharax, Makri and Listuris after the fall of Turai. They flee to another country where the chief socecer is a rival of Listuruis and we find that Tharax actually did win the sword tournament that he has always boasted about . This seems more of a bridge book and I hope some of the original characters including Gurd, Tanrose and other return in the next book
I have always loved the Thraxas series. I never considered before Martin Scott decided to only release his 9th and 10th books online. Now I hear they've been released as actual books I will most certainly buy the books as well! The humour and the unusual fantasy setting (based on Roman times rather than the Middle Ages, at least as far as Turai goes) make these books a must for me. Even though the Thraxas books are simpler and clearly written for amusement I compare Martin Scott with Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fforde and Robert Asprin. I can barely wait for the 11th instalment in this funny series!
